Heard this on the radio this morning:

It's funny, this came out years ago and in some ways it didn't seem like a particularly revolutionary message. 'Sister are doing it for themselves'. I think women were pretty much liberated in the UK and there wasn't much argument at the time, as far as I was aware.
There seems to be more awareness though now of subtle ways that women are still treated unfairly, and maybe it's because people are more aware of other cultures too, where women are still treated blatantly unfairly. This song seems just as relevant now as it did in the 80's.
Two great singers as well.

Diary of a street pastor

It was pretty quiet last night doing the street pastoring. One of the pastors didn't turn up, so there were only three of us. That meant that we didn't wander round the streets as much as normal. We stayed together most of the time, by the table (where we serve tea and coffee).
I was on with Michael (a guy I've not met before). He was quite sombre and I didn't really gel with him particularly well, but when he engaged with the public he did a good job. And Yvette (who I've spoken about before) - my former-colleague from Jamaica. She's always a laugh and it was good to catch up with her because I hadn't seen her for about 3 months.
We spoke to a variety of people (between 10 at night 'til about 2 in the morning) and nothing particularly eventful occurred. I got in at about 2:30, made myself a sandwich and a coffee and watched tele for a bit. I like being up at that time of night because it's peaceful and very rare for me.

Then this morning was interesting. My church are doing 5 sermons on the Reformation (because it's 500 years this month, since it took place).
Our pastor did the first one last week and he challenged everyone to think about whether we've got everything right now, or whether we're humble enough to question whether we still need to change things in church.
This morning, the sermon was delivered by Malcolm (the elder who I fell out with a couple of years ago, for being sexist and aggressive towards my wife. Some of you will remember). He started by saying that the Catholic church had everything wrong and that Martin Luther came along and put it all right!?€¥£
Nice one.
Still, onwards and upwards. At least I get an opportunity to speak in a couple of weeks. And at least our pastor is sound. Moving on...

So my holiday has started and I'm finding it hard to relax.
It's like the last 7 weeks of work have built up and up and I'm still on the crest of the wave. My minds racing. So whereas normally I sleep like a baby because I'm so tired, last night I couldn't sleep. :/
And I woke up early and still feel like I've got a load of energy.
I'm helping out with an alternative Halloween event at my church this afternoon where there will be about 50 infant kids, and I'm doing street pastoring tonight, so I guess I'll need the energy. Then hopefully I can chill.
Tomartelo con calma! Con calma.
And breathe...

scfrankles: (Mrs. Hudson)

Welcome, everyone and thank you for travelling to join me this month in Glasgow!

Well, I say everyone... I believe Mrs. Small-Hobbit’s train has come to a complete halt somewhere in the Midlands. But she has sent her apologies via telegram and will be attempting to join the rest of us as soon as possible.

Our first stop is right here: Miss Cranston’s Tea Rooms on Ingram Street. Where not only will we refresh our bodies with tea, sandwiches and a few mixed fancies, we will refresh our very souls! For in the luncheon room we will be examining the gesso panel The May Queen by Margaret Macdonald. Follow me, please!

...yes, I quite agree. Absolutely beautiful work—and those smoked salmon sandwiches weren’t too bad either.

Now, who is that coming down the pavement? Ah, Mrs. Small-Hobbit! You’re here! Just in time to join us for the second part of our excursion. It’s most exciting—we have been given permission to take part in a life-drawing class at the Glasgow School of Art.

I gather the gentleman model will be fully dressed though, in deference to there being ‘ladies present’. Which seems somewhat ridiculous to me. We are all sophisticated people—I don’t think any of us are delicate little flowers who would faint away merely at the thought of a strange man appearing without his trousers! I mean, who on earth—

Can someone put Mrs. Frankles into the recovery position, please? I’m coming over with the smelling salts.

There we go, Mrs. Frankles, take a deep breath… Ah, she’s coming round, thank heavens.

What’s that, Mrs. Frankles?

No, you certainly can’t have a tot of brandy ‘just to be on the safe side’.

I’m glad you’ve recovered though because the bus for the art school is just approaching…

Well, that was a most productive session! I hope that the visit to the Tea Rooms and the sketches you’ve produced in the life class will aid you in writing your poems.

And just before we head to our overnight lodgings to begin composing, I will add a quotation from Dr. Watson’s story ‘The Copper Beeches’ as one more source of inspiration:

“To the man who loves art for its own sake," remarked Sherlock Holmes, tossing aside the advertisement sheet of the Daily Telegraph, "it is frequently in its least important and lowliest manifestations that the keenest pleasure is to be derived…”

Speaking of Mr. Holmes… He was the one in fact who recommended Mrs. Forbes’ accommodation to me, as he stayed here once on a case. If possible though, please try and refrain from letting Mrs. Forbes know this. Let us just say that our landlady does not remember the stay quite as affectionately as Mr. Holmes does, and we don’t want to be returning to London on the milk train.

And so, on to Mrs. Forbes’ and on to poetry! As always you will be free to use any form you like. Here are a few suggestions:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, alexandrine, ballad, barzelletta, beeswing, blackout poetry, blitz poem, blues stanza, bref double, Burns stanza, call and response, chastushka, cherita, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, clogyrnach, colour poems, compound word verse, concrete poetry, Cornish verse, curtal sonnet, débat, décima, descort, diamante, doggerel, double dactyl, echo verse, ekphrasis, elegiac couplet, elegiac stanza, elfje, englyn, enuig, epigram, epistle, epitaph, epulaeryu, Etheree, fable, Fib, florette, found poetry, free verse, ghazal, haiku, hay(na)ku, In Memoriam stanza, Italian sonnet, jueju, kennings poem, lanturne, lies, limerick, line messaging, list poem, lyric poetry, mathnawī, micropoetry, mini-monoverse, musette, nonsense verse, palindrome poetry, pantoum, Parallelismus Membrorum, poem cycle, puente, quatern, quintilla, renga, rhyming alliterisen, riddle, rimas dissolutas, rime couée, rispetto, Schüttelreim, sedoka, septet, sestina, shadorma, sonnet, stream of consciousness, tanka, tercet, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triangular triplet, tricube, trine, triolet, Tyburn, villanelle, xenolith

All completed poems should be left as comments on my page!

This Sunday, September 24th, we'll be reading The Bruce-Partington Plans.

We'll meet again Mycroft Holmes who deigns to visit Holmes at Baker Street. Naturally of course it isn't a social visit; the plans for a top secret submarine are missing after the man who last had them is found dead.

If you're new to our community, don't be shy! We read each of the 60 ACD canon stories in a little over a year. Some of the stories are split up given their length. You can have a look at our profile page for the schedule. Each week, the story's discussion begins on Sunday and remains open all week. You can join in with the discussion or write a short 60 word story based on the week's case or just read along with us. Or all three! And you can join us here or on our sister community on livejournal,

We look forward to seeing everyone this coming Sunday.

I've been watching a documentary on Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen over the past few nights. Fascinating. She was killed (39 years ago tomorrow coincidentally) and Sid may have killed her but no-one really knows, including him, because he was so high on drugs at the time. He then died from a heroine overdose himself about 4 months later.

This is his version of 'My Way' on YouTube:

It reminds me of when I was in a band in my teens. The Sex Pistols were a textbook influence.
The end of the YouTube video is quite disturbing though in the light of the violence we've had at a number of gigs recently.

The activity this month involves Hallowe'en costumes. Taking a leaf out of the book of their American cousins, the characters of the ACD world have decided to dress in fancy dress. And perhaps you would like to choose the costume for them—describing it in as much detail as you like. For example, Mrs. Hudson might like to be a Gibson girl—with Bessie doing her hair, and Mr. Holmes lending her the corset.

Leave your suggestions in the comments!

As always, you needn’t take part in this activity if you don’t wish to. Once you’re a member, you can post what and when you want—as long as you keep to the 500 words or less wordcount and the ACD Holmes ‘verse. AUs, crossovers and fusions are all permitted, as long as the characters remain essentially recognisable as the original ACD versions.

Please see the profile for the full posting guidelines!
