[personal profile] penta posting in [community profile] factfinding
So, I have another character being drawn up (by another player) for the same game for which I posted highly detailed questions about Israel (admittedly probably too detailed) - only he's playing Russia, and he's trying to draw up a character who served in the Soviet Army as an officer semi-realistically. (It's *after* the character's military career that everything goes interesting.)

I want to write him a summary of the Soviet Army officer's career path, what service branches are available, etc., but nothing I can find tells me the basic stuff. It's all focused on generals and stuff. (Looked on Wiki, looked on Google, neither helped. I found a monograph on dtic.mil that was from 1975 and provided *some* detail, but expected me the reader to know more than I do to make sense of stuff.)

To quote his draft summary: "(1) Early life.  Born in 1959, he follows a similar course to Putin (joining the military instead, but attached as an "adviser" to one of the Soviet Bloc countries after a tour in Afghanistan which gave him a scar on his upper right arm from a Taliban attack).  He resigned with a TBD officer's rank in the middle of the 1991 coup attempt (a la Putin; he's simply younger) rather than join in the attempt (which he percieved as doomed)."

He's trying to figure it out in more detail than that, but the problem is that he (the player) and I (the GM, one of two, responsible for helping him draw up his character - he does the important work of figuring out policies and stuff, the meat of gameplay, himself) can't find anything much about anything re the company-grade and field-grade officers of the Soviet Army and how they were trained, or how their careers progressed, or anything.

In specific:

1. As the character was born in 1959, presume he enters officer training from civilian life sometime around 1977. How long is his officer training, and how is it decided whether he goes, say, infantry or airborne troops?

2. What's the career path like from initial officer training (including "what rank does he enter service at?" - the materials I can find state "Lieutenant", but the Soviet Army has 3 Lieutenant ranks!) to, say, battalion command?

3. What additional school-type training would he undergo during that career path, and at what times during his career? (I can help the player figure out good tour-of-duty mixes once I have that information.)

4. What service arms existed in the Soviet Army? I often hear of officers referred to as a "Colonel of Infantry", "Colonel of Air Defense", "Colonel of Strategic Rocket Forces" - but what are the possible options for the "of x" formula?

5. Were ordinary officers even assigned as "advisors" to Warsaw Pact forces, or only Political Officers?

I know these are really detailed questions in some regard. I'm trying to keep them general, but even the general stuff is hard to figure out. My objectives for this are:

A. Figure out what rank, highest, would have been plausible for what I'm currently thinking is a fairly obscure-ish Russian serving as a Soviet Army Officer from 1977-1991 - if the player wants lower, cool, but I as GM need to have a clue what's "too high".

B. Figure out what his career would have looked like - where would he have served, at what levels, doing what? (Especially key to figure out when he would have served in Afghanistan.)

C. Figure out if the early life posited is *plausible*.

I thus don't need to know deep details (at least not until a player requests a detailed bio of their Russian adversary from their intel people, at which point I may be back...), but only be able to work out a summary. I can do the hard part of the work myself and with the player, but I need help figuring out the foundational stuff before I begin that.

(Edited to add: Link to something Google *did* dredge up for me, and my note that what I was sent was a draft summary of the character, not a full bio. We'll be working on the full bio once we have the summary agreed to.)

This month’s activity is:

Bills

Unfortunately these are a part of everyone’s life, including the inhabitants of Baker Street. Workmen and shopkeepers send their bills to Holmes, Watson and Mrs. Hudson. And of course Holmes sends out his bills to his clients.

Some examples:

To: Mrs. Hudson

Bill for repairs to 221B:

Drains unblocked

Sorting out flood in bathroom

Sorting out strange noise in pipes

Plumber's note: I have now found the source of the problem but I believe you said last time you did not have the heart to evict him.

To: Mrs. Hudson

Bill from Wilton’s Wines and Spirits:

12 bottles of gin
24 bottles of light beer
7 bottles of Scotch
5 bottles of brandy
1 bottle of tonic

Hope this will suffice for this month but if not, please do not hesitate to contact us.

To Lord Brawlton:

The bill for retrieving your kidnapped goldfish plus expenses is enclosed.

S. Holmes

----

Dear Mr. Holmes:

Thank you once again for the return of Moby and Dick, and for your prompt bill.

In fact I had been going to send you a bill for the damage caused to the west wing, the fountains and my wife’s mental health during the course of your investigations.

But let's just call it even.

Please add your own bills in the comments!

Hello, sherlock60 community!

I am [personal profile] alafaye and I am the volunteer mod for our next round, number 6!

I've read some of the stories on and off throughout my years upon this Earth, but it was with this community, during round 4, that I read them entirely without pause. I was unable to participate as much as I wanted to during round 5, owing to some offline events, but when I heard that we would be ending the rounds, I was sad since I now have Sundays off. I volunteered and here we are.

I've been in some kind of fandom since I was in middle school and I've since expanded to many others (too many to list). Sherlock Holmes has always been one of my first loves, however, and I've never left it. (I will endeavor to not let my fannish ideas color my posts here, but do forgive if they leak in without my permission, the sneaky things.) I eagerly look forward reading the stories with you during this next round and shall do my best to not muck it up too badly here as this will our first round here.

We do have a few things to consider before we start next week, August 20th.

-What order shall we read them in?
-And would you like for me to guide a discussion of the story or did you have something new in mind that we could do for our Sunday reading?

Let me know in the comments and I'll let everyone know what our plan will be on Friday if all are amiable.

Until then dear ones.

A Look Back

ext_1620665: knight on horseback (Default)
[identity profile] scfrankles.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sherlock60
Here we are—right at the end of Round 5 and for Small Hobbit and I, it’s the end of our stint of being in charge.

To finish things off, I thought it might be a nice idea to take a look back at some of my favourite 60s from Rounds 3-5. I’ve tried to include as many writers as possible, past and present, and I hope you won’t mind that I’ve slipped a few of my own 60s in too.

So do take a look! Hopefully a few of these will bring back some pleasant memories…

The 60s )

And that’s it! When I joined [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 just over four years ago, I never imagined that I would end up being one of the mods, that I would make lasting friends, and that I would become so thoroughly familiar with the canon. (Still can’t remember the characters’ names though. Do kind of sympathise with ACD on this one…)

I’m sure [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit would like to join me in thanking everyone who took part in Rounds 3-5 in whatever way, but especially [livejournal.com profile] debriswoman, [livejournal.com profile] gardnerhill, [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895 and [livejournal.com profile] rachelindeed. And of course we'd like to thank [livejournal.com profile] spacemutineer, who kindly allowed us to take over the running of the comm after she and [livejournal.com profile] methylviolet10b stepped down.

Small Hobbit and I will be taking more of a backseat from here on in but we will continue to be supportive of the comm. I certainly will be popping round fairly regularly to read and comment.

So, here's to new mod [livejournal.com profile] alafaye - we wish them all the best with Round 6! I believe they will be doing an introduction post on 13th August and then the round will be beginning on the 20th. Don’t forget that from now on you will be able to take part here on LJ or at [community profile] sherlock60 - whatever’s best for you.

And whether you’re taking part in the new round or not, Small Hobbit and I hope you’ll join us over at [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor / [community profile] holmes_minor for even more canon microfiction and poetry!

Mrs. Hudson's Festive Poetry Page

Aug. 6th, 2017 08:02 am
ext_1620665: knight on horseback (Default)
[identity profile] scfrankles.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sherlock60
Welcome to my last ever poetry page at [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60!

It is a special festive page to mark the occasion, and so perhaps you might like to make use of the lighthearted limerick form for your poems. But as always any form is permissible. And it’s liberty hall regarding subject matter. Maybe you would like to write a farewell to Round 5? Or write about your favourite canon story or favourite character? Or write a response to one of the 60-word stories in this round? It is entirely your choice.

I also thought it would be lovely to pick out some of my favourite submissions to the poetry page, and below you will find links to poems for each one of the 60 stories. These are poems that stuck in my head or caught my eye as I looked back. But there were so many wonderful pieces! Please do put your own links in the comments if there are other poems that you remember fondly—your own or other people’s.

The Poems )

Of course, the poetry page has afforded me the opportunity of trying my hand at poetry myself. And though after two rounds I can safely say poetry is not my forte, I do not regret a thing.

So, here is my own final poetic effort at [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60. I chose to rework the lyrics to that marvellous love song ‘Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye’ by Mr. Cole Porter. And—in for a penny, in for a pound—I have decided to perform the resulting song for you.

Excitingly, I have managed to entice Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson back to assist me with this performance. We have Mr. Holmes on violin, Dr. Watson on percussion, and Rachel on banjolele. And myself of course taking the lead vocals.

So, Mr. Holmes, if you wouldn’t mind... Hit it, dear.

Ahem.

Now it’s time to say goodbye, I sigh a little.
Where’s my gin supply? I need to try a little.
Why have those mods above me dealt such a bitter blow?
Both deciding to leg it, and giving me the heave-ho.

Reading sixty tales, with an air of crime about them.
It never fails—I feel the need to rhyme about them.
There’s no Holmes comm finer:
How strange the change from Sherlock60 to Holmes Minor…
But now it’s time to say goodbye.

And so, thank you to the moderators and to Rachel. Thank you to Mr. Holmes and the doctor.

And thank you to the members of our little community. I hope you will all join me at [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor in September.

I have been Mrs. Hudson.

Good afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60!

[identity profile] scfrankles.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] sherlock60
This Sunday, 6th August…

Well, we won’t be posting 60s or looking at a story - we’ve now made our way through the entire canon!

But we will be having a little celebration, just to give Round 5 a proper send-off and to acknowledge the changing of the guard. I’ll be having a look back at some of my favourite 60s from Rounds 3-5, and will be doing one last discussion post - made up of interesting odds and ends that didn’t quite fit into earlier posts, and anything else that takes my fancy over the next few days.

And Mrs. Hudson will be doing a festive poetry page. Again, she’ll be looking back at some of her favourite poems, and it will be liberty hall in the comments! (N.B. Any breakages must be paid for.) Mrs. Hudson suggests limericks but really you are free to use any form you like. Maybe write a farewell to Round 5? Or write about your favourite canon story or favourite character? Or write a response to one of the 60s in this round? It’s entirely up to you.

Although this will be a kind of goodbye, don’t forget that Round 6 is coming - on both LJ and Dreamwidth. [livejournal.com profile] alafaye will be doing an introduction post on Sunday, 13th August, and then the round will be starting on the 20th. And even though Small Hobbit and I will be taking more of a backseat after this week, we will still be taking an interest in the comm. Also Mrs. Hudson’s poetry page will be moving over to [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor, where it will appear monthly from September!
